Intel Core i7

Today released the NDA gag on the media and allowed the publication of benchmarks for their latest and greatest CPU's. I have listed links here to a few of the articles out there if anyone would is up for some light reading. According to http://www.theinquirer.net/ there are no less than 42 reviews available.

http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/15818
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/in ... spx?i=3448
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/di ... cture.html
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20 ... -fast.html
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2 ... 764,00.asp
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/Int ... ,2057.html

For anyone that doesn't care to read the reviews, here's my summary

3 new processors (prices in 1000 quantities)
i965 3.2 GHz $999
i940 2.93 GHz $562
i920 2.66 GHz $284

Biggest changes
Integrated 3-channel DDR3 memory controller (yes, that means 3 sticks of memory for full bandwidth)
Welcome Back "Hyper-Threading" (Task Manager will show 8 cores!)

Pro's
Fast, the lowly i920 at $284 outperforms the QX9770 ($1200) in many benchmarks
Supports 24 Gig of RAM
Did I mention FAST!
X58 Motherboards will support both AMD (ATI) CrossFire and NVidia's Triple-Sli Video Configurations

Con's
Putting a system together requires a new motherboard based on X58 chipset, these are starting to appear in the $300-$400 range
Needs more expensive DDR3 memory.
Intel will only be shipping these 3 models into the summer of 2009, long wait for the product line to fill out.

I think this old Athlon X2 3800+ needs replacing!

Oh crap! I DROOLED on myself!

Here's a question: If a 2.66 GHz Core2-Quad is speed X, how fast is a 2.66 GHz i7 in terms of X?

2X? 3X? 1.5X?

That really depends on the benchmark! In general expect 10-40% boosts.

that is awesome, but is it really worth it in yalls technical genius's minds to buy one right now. After all it is a bit on the pricey side, what do yall think?

That really depends on the person doing the buying, some of us make our livings working on these systems not just playing. Having the right equipment makes it all the easier to do.

From a purely bang for your buck perspective, your always going to be better off buying further down on the performance curve. Then again you might be replacing the system sooner rather than later by doing that.
